“Advanced” Training at the Zedler-Institut –
Experts Deepen Expertise in E-Bikes and Carbon Components

In mid-April, 20 participants in Ludwigsburg expanded their knowledge and professional expertise in the assessment of modern bicycles, e-bikes, and cargo bikes through a targeted two-day training program. The key focus areas of the training are outlined below.

Particular emphasis was placed on the analysis and evaluation of motors and batteries in EPAC systems, as well as the inspection and assessment of carbon components. The participants included professionals from the bicycle industry, automotive damage assessors, and insurance claims adjusters.

The topic is more relevant than ever. Just a few days ago, the increasing number of fatal bicycle accidents was reported in the media. Fortunately, the vast majority of the well over 100,000 bicycle accidents result in far less severe outcomes; however, due to a lack of qualified bicycle experts, claims settlement often becomes a prolonged ordeal for the affected parties.

The assessment of modern bicycles presents specific challenges – not only in technical evaluation, but also in producing transparent and traceable documentation for clients, insurers, and legal professionals, as well as in determining market-relevant values for claims settlement. Simply adopting established practices from the automotive sector does not adequately address the specifics of bicycle and EPAC technology, nor the distinct characteristics of the bicycle market. Comprehensive industry and market knowledge, along with an understanding of legal perspectives, is therefore essential for producing robust and legally sound expert reports.

Two-Day Training Program

The key topics of the two-day “Advanced” training, which builds on the “Basic” seminar, included:

  • E-bike systems, diagnostic capabilities, and typical fault patterns
  • Carbon materials, inspection methods, and repair options
  • Detailed differentiation between pre-existing damage and prior damage
  • Classification of current bicycle technology with regard to replacement values
  • Initial plausibility checks based on real-world case examples

With its “Basic” and “Advanced” training programs, the Zedler-Institut shares insights gained from over 15,000 expert reports on bicycle damage and offers a practice-oriented continuing education program for experts. The aim is to enable significantly faster claims processing in the future through the widespread availability of qualified bicycle assessors.
